In year 9 students will complete their study of the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum and being their study of the Key Stage 4 National Curriculum. These topics will be lay the foundations for their GCSE studies and begin to look at more intricate practical studies.

Curriculum Allocation

Science is taught for a total of four 100 minute lessons per fortnight. Over the course of the year the lessons will be equally distributed between Biology, Chemistry and Physics lessons.

Y9 Curriculum Period 1:

Curriculum content

  • Biology: Cells
  • Physics: Energy; Energy Transfers by Heating
  • Chemistry: Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table

Assessment

Students will sit an exam of 60 minutes in the first assessment window covering the content studied in this curriculum period.

    Y9 Curriculum Period 2:

    Curriculum content

    • Biology: Organ Systems; Bioenergetics
    • Chemistry: Chemical changes; Energy Changes
    • Physics: Circuits

    Assessment

    Students will sit an exam of between 60 and 75 minutes in the second assessment window. This exam will focus on the content taught during CP2 but at least 25% of the exam will be based on the topics studied for CP1.
