In year 9 students will complete their study of the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum and being their study of the Key Stage 4 National Curriculum. These topics will be lay the foundations for their GCSE studies and begin to look at more intricate practical studies.
Curriculum Allocation
Science is taught for a total of four 100 minute lessons per fortnight. Over the course of the year the lessons will be equally distributed between Biology, Chemistry and Physics lessons.
Y9 Curriculum Period 1:
Curriculum content
- Biology: Cells
- Physics: Energy; Energy Transfers by Heating
- Chemistry: Atomic Structure
Assessment
Students will sit an exam of 60 minutes in the first assessment window covering the content studied in this curriculum period.
Y9 Curriculum Period 2:
Curriculum content
- Biology: Organ Systems
- Chemistry: The Periodic Table of Elements
- Physics: Heating
Assessment
Students will sit an exam of between of 75 minutes in CP2.
60 marks will be allocated to these topics from CP2:
- Atoms
- Heating
- Organ systems
15 marks will be allocated to these CP1 topics:
- Energy Transfers
- Cell Structure
Y9 Curriculum Period 3:
Curriculum content
- Biology: Bioenergetics
- Chemistry: Chemical Changes
- Physics: Electricty in the Home
Assessment
Students will sit an exam of 90 minutes in the final assessment window. This exam will focus on the content taught during CP3 but at least 25% of the exam will be based on the topics studied for CP1 and CP2.
Revision resources
Students can use their access to sparxscience to revise topics freely, in addition to their regular homework. Choose "Independent Learning" from the left hand side and navigate to the appropriate topics as listed above.
Students can access Seneca revision at www.senecalearning.com. Students should login using their office 365 account which uses their Endon High School email and password.
Cognito is a great source of free revision materials. It includes past papers, revision flash cards as well as revision notes. Select resources for the AQA exam board when browsing the site.
In Firefly, students can access all lessons for each unit, along with Knowledge Organisers, Glossaries and Schemes of Learning.
