History is taught for two 100 minute lessons per fortnight.

Curriculum content
Unit 1: The rise of the superpowers - Russia and the USA
This unit will look at the emergence of the USA and USSR in the 20th Century that paved their way to becoming the dominant superpowers in the 2nd half of the century
Part 1 - Russia 1900-1945
Lessons will comprise of the following key content:
1. What was Russia like in 1900?
2. Trouble for Tsar Nicolas II
3. The impact of the First World War and the 1917 Revolution
4. Lenin and the Bolsheviks - How did Russia become Communist?
5. Stalin manipulates his way into power
6. How successful was Stalin in modernising the USSR?
Part 2 - USA 1920-1939
Boom! How did America emerge after the Great War?
Lessons will include the following lessons:
7. The Roaring 20s - Henry Ford and the car industry
8. Was Prohibition a mistake? Al Capone
9. How tolerant was 1920s USA?
10. What was the Wall Street Crash?
Unit 2: The Road to World War II
This unit will look at the build up to the Second World War in the 1930s. We will look at the rise of fascism in both Germany and Italy and also Japanese expansion in the Far East. We'll address the role played by Neville Chamberlain and his role in appeasing Hitler and think about how history has perceived him.
Lessons will comprise of the following key content:
11. Japanese invasion of Manchuria and the failure of the League of Nations to stop this
12. The rise of fascism in Italy and the failure of the League of Nations to stp the Italian invasion of Abyssinia
13. The early life of Adolf Hitler and how he became Chancellor of Germany
14. Hitler and the road to war in Europe
15. The policy of Appeasement
Unit 3: The Second World War
In this unit of work pupils will study the key events of the Second World War
Lessons will comprise of the following key content:
16. Dunkirk: Triumph or disaster?
Assessment
Assessment 1 will test pupils understanding of the content taught in Curriculum Period 1
Curriculum Period 2:
Curriculum Period 2 has 14 lessons
Curriculum contents
Continuation of Unit 3: The Second World War
1. The Battle of Britain
2. The Blitz and the Home Front
3. Operation Barbarossa
4. Japanese attack of Pearl Harbour and the USA joins the war
5. The Battle of the Atlantic
6. D-Day
7. The bombing of Dresden - a city too far?
8. The War in the Pacific
9. The use of the Atom Bombs on Japan
Unit 4: The Holocaust
During this unit of work pupils will assess the idea of 'War Crimes' and study the Nazi genocide from the Second World War. We'll study how and why this happened and think about the key lessons we should take away from this tragic, dark period of human history. We will watch the movie, 'The Pianist' as part of this unit work (parental permission will be requested for this).
Lessons will comprise of the following key content:
10. Life in Nazi Germany
11. Persecution of Jewish people in Nazi Germany before 1939
12. The 'Final Solution' and a study of Auschwitz
13. Who was to blame?
14. Study of an individual story from the Holocaust - "The Pianist".
Assessment
Assessment 2 will test pupils understanding of content taught in Assessment Period 2 and approximately 20% of content from Curriculum Period 1.Curriculum Period 3:

Curriculum content
1. The Nuremberg Trials and remembering the Holocaust
Unit 5: Key events of the second half of the 20th Century
In this unit we will address some of the key events in the post Second World War era and introduce pupils to the concept of the Cold War.
2. From World War to Cold War (Space Race)
3. Conflict in the 2nd half of the 20th Century - Vietnam
4. Conflict in the 2nd half of the 20th Century - Falklands and modern warfare
