In year 7 students will continue their journey through the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum for science. These topics will build on the skills and knowledge gained in year 7.

Curriculum Allocation

Science is taught for a total of four 100 minute lessons per fortnight. Over the course of the year the lessons will be equally distributed between Biology, Chemistry and Physics lessons.

Y8 Curriculum Period 1:

Curriculum content

  • Tissues and Organs
  • Acids and Alkalis
  • Movement and Pressure

Assessment

Students will sit an exam of 50 minutes in the first assessment window. 60% of the assessment will be on the topics of tissues and organs, and acids and alkalis. 40% of the assessment will be on year 7 topics.

Note that movement and pressure will be assessed in CP2.

Students will also be regularly assessed through "mastery quizzes" at the end of each unit to help inform both staff and students of their areas of strength and weakness. This can be used by staff to inform lesson content and by students to prepare best for their assessments.

    Y8 Curriculum Period 2:

    Curriculum content

    • Photosynthesis and Respiration
    • Chemical Changes
    • Magnetism
    • Life Diversity

    Assessment

Students will sit an exam of 50 minutes in the second assessment window.

The CP2 assessment will focus on these topics:

    • Movement and Pressure
    • Respiration and Photosynthesis
    • Chemical Changes

As well as these topics from CP1:

    • Tissues and Organs
    • Acids and Alkalis

Students will also be regularly assessed through "mastery quizzes" at the end of each unit to help inform both staff and students of their areas of strength and weakness. This can be used by staff to inform lesson content and by students to prepare best for their assessments.

      Y8 Curriculum Period 3:

      Curriculum content

      • Earth Systems
      • Resistance
      • Nutrition
      • Light
      • Sound and waves

      Assessment

Students will sit two exams of 50 minutes each. 60% of the marks will be based on the most recent topics and the remaining 40% on other topics covered earlier in the year.

Students will also be regularly assessed through "mastery quizzes" at the end of each unit to help inform both staff and students of their areas of strength and weakness. This can be used by staff to inform lesson content and by students to prepare best for their assessments.

      Revision resources

Students can use their access to sparxscience to revise topics freely, in addition to their regular homework. Choose "Independent Learning" from the left hand side and navigate to the appropriate topics as listed above.

Students can access Seneca revision at www.senecalearning.com. Students should login using their office 365 account which uses their Endon High School email and password.

In Firefly, students can access all lessons for each unit, along with Knowledge Organisers, Glossaries and Schemes of Learning.
