Religious Education is taught for 1 100 minute per fortnight

INTENT and IMPLEMENTATION

Curriculum INTENT - Sikhism is the youngest of the major world faiths and at it's core it teaches religious freedom. All people have the right to follow their own paths without condemnation or coercion from others. Sikhism stands for social justice, human liberty, equality, freedom of conscience, ethical living, and gender equality. All of which reflect British values.

In Unit 2 we begin to explore the concept of Journey in religion and Pilgrimage. In the context of our Sikh studies students will have learned about the Golden Temple as a place of Pilgrimage for Sikhs. They will firstly look at Christian Pilgrimage in the UK and Europe. Exploring the historical contexts of these places as well as understanding that Pilgrimage is becoming increasingly popular today. Students must assess whether people are becoming more religious or spiritual. Not all people who visit these places are Christian.

The Hajj Pilgrimage is the biggest annual Pilgrimage and falls in the month of Dhul Hija. Islam is the fastest growing faith in the world and students will explore the importance of ritual.

Curriculum IMPLEMENTATION - At Endon we focus on the core theme of equality threading through Sikhism, exploring though the lives of the Guru's, the role of the Guru Granth Sahib and the concepts of Langar and Seva. We want students to understand the contributions made by Sikh people to our country - placing this contribution in both a historical and modern context.

We briefly explore Pilgrimage across the world religions but will specifically focus on the worlds biggest faiths - Christianity and Islam. This is good preparation and foundation knowledge for the GCSE. There will be a focus on how these places of Pilgrimage and worship replay events from the past and also improve the believers chances of gaining a place in the afterlife.
