The AQA Exam Board is used for all English examinations.
Curriculum Allocation
English is taught for five 100 minute lessons per fortnight.
Curriculum Period 1:
Curriculum content
The subject areas taught throughout the period of the autumn term include the following:
- A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
- English Language Paper 2 (Reading and writing a selection of non-fiction texts)
- An Inspector Calls by J B Priestley
Assessment
There will be two exams for the Year 10 assessment
- A GCSE exam question on A Christmas Carol (mark out of 30 and reported as a percentage). The question will be on one of the key themes in the novel.
- English Language Paper 2 (Reading and Writing Non-Fiction). Mark out of 80.
Curriculum Period 2:
Curriculum content
The subject areas taught during the spring term include:
- Love and Relationships (15 poems from the Love and Relationships collection in the AQA Anthology)
- English Language Paper 1 (Reading and writing a range of fiction texts)
- Unseen Poetry (Reading, analysing and comparing a range of unseen poems)

- English Language Paper 1
Curriculum Period 3:
Curriculum content
The subject areas taught during the summer term include:
- A Christmas Carol revision
- An Inspector Calls revision
- English Language Paper 2
- Complete any Spoken Language Endorsements not done in Year 9
Revision resources
These areas cover the whole of the GCSE syllabus for both Literature and Language. Each of these areas will be studied on rotation. The assessment for this section of the syllabus will be the final GCSE national examinations.
