AQA Art (Textiles) - 8204.
With Textile design you have chance to design products for woven, knitted, stitched, printed or decorative textiles. Areas of study include fashion design and illustration, costume design, constructed textiles, printed and dyed textiles and digital textiles.
Curriculum Allocation
Art Textiles is taught for 3 x 100 minute lessons per fortnight.
The course consists in 2 parts; A Portfolio of two coursework units (or projects) worth 60% of the GCSE and an Externally Set Assignment worth 40% of the GCSE.
Assessment Criteria/ Objectives:
Assessment objectives (AOs) are set by Ofqual and are the same across all GCSE Art and Design specifications and all exam boards.
The exams and non-exam assessment will measure how students have achieved the following assessment objectives.
- AO1: Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources. (25%)
- AO2: Refine work by exploring ideas, selecting and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes. (25%)
- AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses. (25%)
- AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and demonstrates understanding of visual language. (25%)
Assessment Criteria (what your work will be assessed against):
Curriculum Period 1: Upcycling/ Metamorphosis Project.
An introductory project to textiles and textiles techniques, starting in Year 10 in September.
This project introduces the techniques and equipment that you must confidently use within textiles. Your project will be focused on upcycling, global sustainable issues within fashion, fabric manipulation.
You will research artists such as Vivienne Westwood, Dolce & Gabana, Raf Simmons as well as textiles artists such as Cas Holmes, Jennifer Collier and
You will experiment with materials to construct, weave, smock and shred to form new fabrics within your studies.
Curriculum Period 1 Assessment:
You will design and produce a textiles piece which demonstrates your understanding, skill and ability in a 5 hour practice exam paper.
Curriculum Period 2:
You will design and make an outcome.
Curriculum Period 2 Assessment:
The assessment will be based on all the work you have produced so far and not just one item. The project should evidence all four Assessment Objectives.
Curriculum Period 3: Insects Project.
From March of Year 10 you then look at 'Insects' as a starting point for your development of ideas. Using the work of Alexander McQueen and Timorous Beasties as influences you will begin to develop pattern and colour work to inform your ideas and develop your skills and techniques leading to an outcome.
Curriculum Period 3 Assessment:
You will be assessed on the progress you have made on your Insect Project covering all 4 Assessment Objectives, including an outcome based and influenced by 'Insects'.
This project should be completed by the end of the summer term.
