Year 10 pupils will continue the new AQA GCSEs Trilogy or Separate Science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students are examined externally at the end of year 11. There will be six exams; two for biology, two for chemistry and two for physics. Students in year 11 will be using the new grading system of 1-9. However in year 10 students will receive percentage grades for all exams

Curriculum Allocation

Science is taught for a total of five 100 minute lessons per fortnight. Over the course of the year the lessons will be equally distributed between Biology, Chemistry and Physics lessons.

Triple (Separate) Science: AQA Exam Board

Triple Science. This is an excellent course for more able students who are considering doing at least one A level in a science related course. Only the most able pupils who have demonstrated commitment will be considered. This course has a bulkier content with more practical work required. Pupils will be awarded three GCSEs, one each in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each award being independent of the other two. All external exams take place at the end of Year 11. Pupils can achieve the full range of grades from 1 – 9.

Students cover the paper 1 topics in year 9 and the start of year 10. They will begin to cover the paper 2 topics at the end of year 10 and into year 11 for all Sciences.

All triple topics will also be taught to students taking this course.

Y10 Curriculum Period 1:

Students have an exam for each science of 45 minutes examining what they have covered so far.

Content covered in this period

  • Biology: How Science Works, B5 Communicable Disease, B6 Preventing and Treating Disease
  • Chemistry: How Science Works, C4 Chemical Calculations, Starting C5 Chemical Changes.
  • Physics: How Science Works, P4 Circuits

Y10 Curriculum Period 2:

Students have an exam for each science of up to 60 minutes. This exam will be 75% content from curriculum period 2. It will be 25% recap of content from curriculum period 1.

Content covered in this period

  • Biology: B7 Non Communicable Disease, Beginning B11 Hormonal Control
  • Chemistry: Finish C5 Chemical Changes, C6 Electrolysis
  • Physics: P6 Particle Model, Start P7 Radioactivity

Y10 Curriculum Period 3:

Students have an exam for each science of up to 60 minutes. This exam will be 75% content from curriculum period 3. It will be 25% recap of content from curriculum periods 1 and 2.

Content covered in this period

  • Biology: B10 Nervous System, T10 Brain and the Eye, Finish B11 Hormonal Control, T12 The Kidney
  • Chemistry: Finish C6 Electrolysis, C7 Fuel Cells, C8 Rates and Equilibrium, Starting C9 Crude Oil
  • Physics: Finish P7 Radioactivity, P8 Forces in balance, P9 Motion, P10 Forces and Motion.

Trilogy (Combined) Science: Specification/Exam Board

Trilogy Course. This course is suitable for a wide range of pupil abilities and is still an excellent preparation for A level science. As there is less content (but all 3 Sciences are still studied) students will have a better opportunity to access higher grades as there will be more time in class to cover the content in greater detail. Two Combined Science GCSEs will be awarded. Pupils can achieve the full range of grades up to 1 - 9. All students not offered the Triple Science course will be entered for this course.

Students cover the paper 1 topics in year 9 and the start of year 10. They will begin to cover the paper 2 topics at the end of year 10 and into year 11 for all Sciences.

Revision resources

Students can access kerboodle resources including the virtual text book as well as a wide variety of other useful resources by going to to www.kerboodle.com. Their username and password is the same as their school username and password. Institution code:hc5

If they are struggling to access kerboodle they can contact their class teacher using the emails below.

In  firefly students can access all lessons for each unit, along with Knowledge Organisers, Glossaries and Schemes of Learning. This includes all the content covered by all students (trilogy) as well as the additional triple only content.
