Curriculum Allocation
Art is taught for 3 x 100 minute lessons per fortnight.
The course consists in 2 parts; A Portfolio of two coursework units (or projects) worth 60% of the GCSE and an Externally Set Assignment worth 40% of the GCSE.
Assessment objectives
Assessment objectives (AOs) are set by Ofqual and are the same across all GCSE Art and Design specifications and all exam boards.
The exams and non-exam assessment will measure how students have achieved the following assessment objectives.
- AO1: Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources. (25%)
- AO2: Refine work by exploring ideas, selecting and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes. (25%)
- AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses. (25%)
- AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and demonstrates understanding of visual language. (25%)
Curriculum Period 1:
Starting in September of Year 10 you will begin to produce your coursework projects. The first project is set to give you the structure and experience of a full coursework project. It contributes directly to your GCSE.
Assessment
The assessment at the end of the first Curriculum Period will be to work on a large scale oil pastel study demonstrating your ability to record detail and colour. You will demonstrate your ability to control the materials and media and skill level with recording observations.
Curriculum Period 2:
Curriculum content
The project will continue with experimentation of materials and media, exploring techniques and processes. You will be expected to research various artists such as Timorous Beasties and Sue Blackwell as well as others that you find which are relevant to your theme of 'Insects'.
Assessment
The second Curriculum Period will culminate in an assessment demonstrating your ability to produce creative developmental ideas leading towards an outcome of your choice.
The Insect project would finish at Easter of Year 10.
The Insect Project contributes to the entire coursework portfolio which is 60% of your overall GCSE in art.
Curriculum Period 3: Sketchbook Presentation
The summer term will be spent preparing your sketchbooks for the mock exam unit. You will be assessed on the manipulation of materials, your presentation of work and your research and analysis.
Assessment
During the assessment you will be expected to research independently, present research thoroughly and with meaning as well as produce a study inspired and influenced by one of the artists researched.
